Surrey awards contract for Indigenous carving centre
CITY OF SURREY—A rendering shows the design of the South Surrey Indigenous Carving Centre.

SURREY, B.C.—Surrey is carving out space for Indigenous cultural experiences with a new project.

The city announced it has awarded the contract for the construction of the South Surrey Indigenous Carving Centre. Work on project is scheduled to begin early next month with substantial completion expected this August.

The city noted the carving centre project emerged from ongoing discussions and consultation with Katzie, Kwantlen and Semiahmoo First Nations.

“The South Surrey Carving Centre will be a welcome addition to the cultural offerings we have in Surrey,” said Mayor Doug McCallum in a statement. “The carving centre will be an important space that supports Indigenous cultural practices. I am glad that council has been able to move so quickly on this project and I would like to thank our partners Heritage BC and Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society for their generous support.”

Funding for the project got the green light as part of the city’s 2021-2025 Five Year Capital Plan, with additional support of a $400,000 grant from Heritage BC and a $20,000 grant from the Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society.
